Screening Processes Optimized in Hot Briquetted Iron Applications

Optimizing screening processes on Hot Briquetted Iron plants, is an area of expertise for Schenck Process, who for a number of years has very successfully supported an engineering and plant construction company (EPC), and world leader in metallurgical plant solutions. The client of Schenck Process supplies across the entire value chain from raw materials to the finished product and approached Schenck Process with their requirement for screening equipment and accessories at a new Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant. 

The customer had unique, specific design demands based around their limited space and extreme operating conditions. With 7 briquetting lines needed within the plant, they were focused on achieving an easily managed, reliable solution to be delivered and installed in a timely manner.

Schenck Process worked in close partnership with the customer taking a design-led approach to supply a complete modular screening solution, whilst also meeting the complex expectations of their client’s end user. Having worked with Schenck Process previously over a number of years on other sites, they knew that they could have complete confidence in the proposal. Schenck Process’s shared history has enabled both businesses to work together, communicating requirements and learnings to optimize screening machines over time. The proven technology has been in operation with the client since 1985 and the wealth of expertise offered by Schenck Process allows their specialist team to provide effective solutions to even the most difficult challenge.


The plant construction was flexible and the installation could be done on demand due to the ‘plug and play’ nature of the screening equipment. Due to a number of challenges with space on site it was imperative that the screening equipment was easy to handle during the plant erection to alleviate any downtime. As everything was preinstalled it was simple for the client to lift the package in place with only a few points to connect. Our ability to analyze the customer requirements in advance meant that we were able use the modular system design effectively to support this process, a success that will be utilised in future projects.

By installing each complete Screening unit within a frame, including all of the accessories listed below, Schenck Process were able to overcome any obstacles that could appear during installation and subsequently the operation of the system,

Schenck Process’ unparalleled reliability and proven technology in Screening, is designed to withstand thermal expansion and high abrasiveness of the feed material. With temperatures reaching 750°C the machinery has to be able to endure a challenging environment without compromising on quality.

They were able to handle large quantities of materials and classify them to a high degree of accuracy.  With screens and screening panels that are customized for each project Schenck Process can ensure a durability that accounts for all environmental considerations. 

The design and supply of mobile maintenance cars means that the customer is able to complete tasks such as removing and inserting the trough without moving the screen or dust hood. Developments like this, ease the maintenance burden, significantly reducing downtime. Hot Briquetted Iron has many environmental and cost benefits.  The reduction in CO² released into the atmosphere as a result is substantial and is necessary to support the increased stringency required in crude steel production processes.  With less overall consumption needed in Hot Briquetted Iron, it is the most environmentally friendly method of obtaining iron from ore. Combined with a future switch to hydrogen, the process will become increasingly clean and of huge benefit to both the customer and the environment.
